Many members ask what beginner, intermediate, or advanced means. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is the standard we point to when describing English level.
Basic user
- A1 (Beginner) — very simple phrases and familiar topics
- A2 (Elementary) — routine tasks, short exchanges on familiar subjects
Independent user
- B1 (Intermediate) — main points on familiar matters, travel, work, school
- B2 (Upper intermediate) — complex text, spontaneous conversation with native speakers
Proficient user
- C1 (Advanced) — demanding, longer texts; fluent, flexible expression
- C2 (Fluent) — near-native ease in demanding situations

Channel names and member colours often reflect level. Start where you are comfortable — text before voice if speaking makes you nervous. You can change rooms as you improve.

The EF SET offers a free online placement test. Use it as a rough guide, not a permanent label.
