English proficiency levels (CEFR)

A1 to C2 explained — and how to find channels that match your level on the server.

Many members ask what beginner, intermediate, or advanced means. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is the standard we point to when describing English level.

Basic user

  • A1 (Beginner) — very simple phrases and familiar topics
  • A2 (Elementary) — routine tasks, short exchanges on familiar subjects

Independent user

  • B1 (Intermediate) — main points on familiar matters, travel, work, school
  • B2 (Upper intermediate) — complex text, spontaneous conversation with native speakers

Proficient user

  • C1 (Advanced) — demanding, longer texts; fluent, flexible expression
  • C2 (Fluent) — near-native ease in demanding situations

On The English Hub

Channel names and member colours often reflect level. Start where you are comfortable — text before voice if speaking makes you nervous. You can change rooms as you improve.

Test your level

The EF SET offers a free online placement test. Use it as a rough guide, not a permanent label.
