Mentions are how Discord decides who gets notified. A direct @username ping reaches one person even when a channel is set to mentions only. @role pings everyone who holds that role — useful for events, easy to overuse. @everyone reaches all members in the server; @here reaches those currently online.
If pings overwhelm you, open the server's notification settings and enable Suppress @everyone and @here, and optionally Suppress All Role @mentions. You can also mute busy channels while leaving important ones on mentions-only.
On The English Hub, staff use pings for announcements and events, not casual conversation. Adjusting your own settings is usually more productive than arguing in chat about who should stop pinging.
